CBS Replaces Canceled Drama Series With a Reality Show

CBS has officially pulled the plug on The Equalizer, the hit action drama starring Queen Latifah, after five successful seasons. The surprise cancellation was announced last Friday, ending both the series and any plans for a potential spinoff.

In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Queen Latifah reflected on her journey portraying Robyn McCall, a reimagined version of the original 1980s character. “Stepping into a kick-ass role like Robyn was everything I hoped it would be,” she wrote. “The Equalizer blew past every dream we had for it, and having the opportunity to do this for five seasons honestly feels surreal.”

The Sunday night slot previously held by The Equalizer will now feature a completely different type of show: a music competition series titled The Road. Created by Taylor Sheridan—best known for Yellowstone—the new series will follow country music star Keith Urban as he travels across America in search of rising talent. Urban will be joined by fellow country artist Gretchen Wilson, who will serve as his “tour manager,” and Blake Shelton is also expected to play a major role in the series.

CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach expressed enthusiasm for the network’s revamped lineup, saying, “Our 2025–2026 primetime schedule features a strong mix of fan-favorite series and exciting new projects. The support from our loyal viewers allows us to take bold steps and introduce fresh content that keeps the energy high every night of the week.”

The Road marks a notable shift in tone and style for CBS’s Sunday programming, trading the high-stakes action of The Equalizer for musical performances and talent discovery. While fans of Queen Latifah’s show may be disappointed, the network is betting that music lovers will tune in for this new journey.
