Living in an old house often means dealing with spiders, but when they began appearing every day, one homeowner searched for a solution.

After trying remedies like peppermint oil, tea tree sprays, chestnuts, sealing cracks, and removing webs, the spiders continued to return.

A friend suggested using Vicks VapoRub as a spider repellent. The idea is based on the strong scents in Vicks, including menthol, eucalyptus oil, camphor, cedarleaf oil, and thymol.

These odors may interfere with spiders’ sensory cues, making treated areas less appealing. Although scientific evidence is limited, many people report success with the method.

To try it, small amounts of Vicks were placed on cotton balls and positioned near windows, corners, and furniture.

Within days, there appeared to be fewer spider sightings, though it is impossible to know if Vicks alone caused the change.

Other commonly recommended repellents include peppermint oil, cedar products, vinegar, citrus peels, and food-grade diatomaceous earth.

Combined with sealing entry points and reducing clutter, these methods may help reduce spider activity.

While no solution guarantees a spider-free home, finding fewer spiders can feel like a worthwhile victory.
