Gen-Z does not like ‘passive aggressive’ thumbs up emoji

Generational differences have always shaped the way people communicate, and Generation Z is no exception. Just as older generations once struggled to understand millennials, many are now puzzled by some of Gen Z’s habits and preferences. One surprising example involves something as simple as the thumbs-up emoji, which many older users see as friendly and positive but some younger people interpret quite differently.

The discussion gained attention when a Gen Z worker shared their experience using Microsoft Teams in a professional environment. They explained that while many colleagues frequently use the thumbs-up reaction to acknowledge messages, they personally prefer using heart reactions or sending short written responses such as “Thanks!” or “Great!” They admitted that the thumbs-up emoji feels strangely unsettling, even though they recognize it is commonly used and generally accepted in workplace communication.

Many younger users agreed with this perspective. One 24-year-old commented that the thumbs-up emoji is often viewed as passive-aggressive among younger people. Others suggested that the reaction can seem impersonal, especially compared to a more thoughtful response. For some, the emoji may feel abrupt or dismissive rather than warm and engaging.

The differing opinions highlight how communication styles continue to evolve across generations. While older users may see the thumbs-up emoji as a simple acknowledgment, younger individuals may attach a different meaning to it based on their experiences and digital culture. The debate serves as a reminder that even small symbols can carry different messages depending on who is receiving them.
