Fan falls from stands during Pirates game – here’s what happened

Tragedy at PNC Park: 20-Year-Old Fan Critically Injured After Falling from Stands During Pirates Game

What began as a celebratory night at PNC Park turned tragic on Wednesday, May 1, when 20-year-old Kavan Markwood of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, fell approximately 21 feet from the stands during a Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs game.

The accident, which occurred during the bottom of the seventh inning, shocked fans, players, and community members, casting a somber mood over what had been a spirited evening of baseball.

Celebration Turns to Chaos

Witnesses reported that the fall happened just moments after Pirates legend Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead double, igniting excitement throughout the stadium. In Section 142, Markwood had removed his shirt and was pouring beer on himself in celebration when he lost his balance and fell over a 36-inch railing, landing on the right-field warning track.

The railing, located just behind the park’s iconic 21-foot Roberto Clemente Wall, was confirmed by team officials to exceed building code requirements. The area is a popular section for fans, often considered part of the ballpark’s unique atmosphere.

Emergency Response and Current Condition

Emergency responders—including Pirates team trainers, EMS, and Pittsburgh police—rushed to the scene immediately. Markwood was stabilized on a backboard and transported to Allegheny General Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition.

Authorities have stated that the incident is being treated as accidental, and there is no indication of foul play.

A Beloved Athlete and Community Member

Markwood, a 2022 graduate of South Allegheny High School, was a standout student-athlete known for his tenacity on and off the field. He played linebacker at Walsh University before transferring to Wheeling University, where he appeared in five games during the 2023 season. He was also recognized on the Mountain East Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Former Wheeling coach Zac Bruney described him to TMZ Sports as “a very good young man” who had recently stepped away from the football program to pursue work but had intentions to return.
