Dog Overcomes His Fear Of Strangers With Help Of Tennis Balls and a Sign

Mojo was adopted by Anni Cummings in 2022, and while the two bonded right away, she quickly noticed he was anxious around unfamiliar people. Although his exact past is unknown, she believes his social fear likely stemmed from something that happened before he arrived at the shelter.

Everything changed when the family moved into a new home. Mojo began barking at people passing by the front yard—not out of aggression, but fear.

Cummings knew her dog wasn’t being “mean,” just scared, and she searched for a way to help him feel more comfortable in his new environment. The answer turned out to be something very simple: tennis balls.

Mojo’s absolute favorite thing in the world is fetch. When he’s playing, his anxiety disappears completely and he becomes a different, joyful dog.

So Cummings placed a bucket of tennis balls on the fence and added a handwritten message inviting people to help. The sign explained that Mojo wasn’t mean—he just needed someone to throw the ball so they could be friends.

It didn’t take long for kindness to show up. Within minutes of the sign going up, a neighbor stopped, picked up a ball, and played fetch with Mojo for nearly an hour.

Since then, Mojo has become a neighborhood favorite. Kids, dog walkers, and even postal workers now stop by to play with him, turning his front yard into a place of connection instead of fear. He’s even got a custom-made sign declaring “I promise I’m not mean.”

What started as one dog’s anxiety has turned into a beautiful daily ritual—and even a small online following, with people around the world wishing they could come throw a ball for Mojo too.

Sometimes, the simplest idea really is the most powerful: a little patience, a little understanding… and a tennis ball can change everything. 🐾
