I’m Not Contributing a Penny to My Late Husband’s Alleged Child

It’s been five years since my husband passed away, and I’ve been raising our child on my own ever since. Being a single mom hasn’t been easy, but we’ve managed to build a stable life together. Then, out of nowhere a few weeks ago, a woman showed up at my door with a child and claimed the child was my late husband’s. She demanded half of his estate.

At first, I thought it had to be some kind of scam. My husband has been gone for years, so the situation didn’t make sense. But then she presented a DNA test and continued insisting on her claim. I responded bluntly, telling her that half of nothing is still nothing.

The reality is that my husband didn’t leave behind any real estate or wealth. The only valuable thing we ever had was a rental house his parents gave us, and since it was in both our names, ownership passed fully to me after his death. I’ve already sold the house, and the money is now set aside for my child’s college fund.

I’ve spoken with a lawyer, and legally I’m not obligated to give her or her child anything. Still, some people around me say I’m being cold and unfair, suggesting I should share something. I don’t see it that way—I believe my responsibility is to protect my child’s future first, and I’m not convinced this situation is as straightforward as it’s being made out to be.
