Everyone who passed by the dog that day came to the same conclusion.

She must be pregnant.

From a distance, there seemed to be no other explanation. Her stomach was enormous — round, swollen, and so unnaturally large that it immediately caught people’s attention. On her thin body, it looked even more disturbing.

People slowed down as they walked past.

Some pointed.
Some whispered to each other.
And almost everyone said the same thing: “She’s about to have puppies.”

But the closer someone looked, the more unsettling the scene became.

The dog was lying alone near an old fence, stretched out on the cold ground as if she didn’t have the strength to move anymore. Her fur was dirty and tangled, her body painfully thin, and her breathing slow and heavy.

Everything about her looked weak and drained.

Some people standing nearby continued to believe she was about to give birth. That seemed like the only logical explanation for such a large belly.

The dog was not pregnant.

She was suffering from a severe and life-threatening uterine infection known as pyometra.

This dangerous condition causes the uterus to fill with infected fluid and toxins, causing the abdomen to swell dramatically. From the outside, it can easily be mistaken for pregnancy.

But inside the body, the infection can become deadly.

Without treatment, pyometra can lead to organ failure, sepsis, and sudden death.

In this dog’s case, the infection had already reached a critical stage.

The veterinarians explained that she would need emergency surgery immediately if she had any chance of surviving.

The infected uterus had to be removed as quickly as possible.

But the surgery was risky.

The dog was extremely weak, dehydrated, and underweight. Her body had been fighting the infection for a long time, and there was no guarantee she would survive the operation.

Still, there was no other choice.

The veterinary team prepared for surgery right away.

For hours, rescuers waited anxiously outside the operating room, hoping that the fragile dog they had found lying near the fence still had enough strength left to fight.

Finally, the procedure ended.

Against the odds, she had survived the surgery.

She began lifting her head more often.

Weeks later, she was walking normally again.

Her strength returned.

Her appetite improved.
