It all started when I boarded a flight home after visiting my mother. I settled into my seat, ready to lose myself in a book, sip on a gin and tonic, and enjoy a quiet few hours. Then I saw her boarding pass as she tucked it away. The name on it was all too familiar. Clara. It struck me instantly—I was sitting next to my husband’s ex-wife. I’d seen her face before, in the old wedding photos Oscar had tucked away when I moved into his home.

Once, he had offered me a glimpse into his past. “You can look through them before I pack everything away into the basement,” he had said. “I’m just waiting for Clara to let me know if she wants them.” He had tried to play it off casually, but something about that moment lingered in my mind, and now I understood why.

Suddenly, Clara turned to me and spoke. “Grace, right? You’re Oscar’s new wife?”
