Every Night, the Black Dog Growled at the Baby — Until the Father Called the

The officer’s flashlight swept across the room, illuminating every corner as he investigated the ominous crack with a keen eye. Son and Han watched with bated breath from the doorway, their baby nestled securely in Han’s arms, while Ink remained vigilant, a low growl rumbling from his throat.

“Let’s open it up,” the officer suggested, motioning to his partner for assistance. They gently pried the loose wood away, revealing a narrow cavity beneath the floorboards, a secret space that had been hidden from view. The air was thick with dust, and an unsettling musty odor permeated the room.

As the officers carefully explored the cavity with their flashlights, they discovered something that made everyone’s blood run cold: a faded, tattered blanket with unidentifiable stains and remnants of what appeared to be personal belongings. A small, rusted locket and a bundle of letters, their ink smudged and unreadable, lay abandoned in the darkness.

“Looks like someone had been living in here,” the second officer muttered, perplexity in his voice. “This might explain the noises you’ve been hearing.”

Son’s mind raced as he tried to piece together what had been happening under their noses. “How could this have gone unnoticed?” he wondered aloud, his voice barely above a whisper. Han clutched the baby tightly, her eyes wide with fear and disbelief.

The first officer, maintaining his composure, continued to examine the space. “It’s possible that whoever was here was using this as a hiding place. It’s unlikely they were living here continuously… more like coming and going as they pleased.”

Son felt a chill run down his spine. The thought that someone had been sneaking in and out of their home, so close to their sleeping child, was unfathomable.

“We will need to investigate further,” the officer concluded, standing up and dusting off his hands. “I suggest you secure the premises and consider installing additional locks and security measures.”

The officers’ discovery left Son and Han reeling. With the police gone, they sat in the living room, unable to return to the bedroom that had become the scene of such unsettling revelations. Ink settled at their feet, still alert but no longer growling, his presence offering some comfort amidst the chaos.

As the first light of dawn seeped through the windows, Son and Han knew they had to take action. The hidden space beneath their home needed to be properly sealed, and they resolved to install security cameras around the property. The safety of their family depended on it.

Ink, their loyal black dog, had sensed something amiss long before they did. His unyielding vigilance had led them to the truth hidden beneath the shadows, safeguarding the baby from an unseen threat. As Han gently rocked the baby back to sleep, she whispered a silent prayer of thanks to Ink, the guardian who had protected them all.

In the days that followed, life slowly returned to normal, though the memory of the terrifying nights lingered. The experience had left an indelible mark, but Son and Han found solace in knowing that they were stronger and more vigilant than before. And each night, as the baby slept peacefully in her crib, Ink remained at his post, ever watchful, ensuring the safety of his family.
