Wasps, in particular, are the ones I avoid—they sting, and I’m mildly allergic. Mail carriers share the same concern when delivering mail.

Why Wasps Love Mailboxes

According to a Reddit post by a mail carrier, wasps—especially yellowjackets—often make nests inside mailboxes. During hot days and chilly evenings, the mailbox offers a safe, protected, and cozy home for these stinging insects.

A Hidden Danger for Mail Carriers
The same mail carrier explained that multiple wasps often lurk at the back of a mailbox, out of sight. When the carrier reaches inside to deliver mail, the wasps become agitated and sting. This carrier reported being stung ten times over a single summer. Clearly, mailboxes can become a surprising hazard.

A Simple Trick to Keep Wasps Away
So, what can you do to prevent this? Mail carriers have discovered that wasps dislike the scent of dryer sheets. Placing a scented dryer sheet at the back of your mailbox can discourage wasps from nesting there.

If you spot a dryer sheet in your mailbox, leave it in place! It works best as a preventative measure—an existing nest may not be deterred. Keep the sheet fragrant, and replace it once the scent fades.
