Travel specialists often recommend placing your suitcase in the bathtub when staying in a hotel. Although this suggestion may seem odd at first, it can help reduce the risk of bedbugs traveling home with you. These insects prefer soft, warm environments such as mattresses, carpets, and upholstered furniture, making luggage placed on those surfaces vulnerable.

Because they are small and capable of hiding easily, even a brief encounter can lead to an infestation that is difficult and costly to remove. The bathtub is considered safer because of its smooth, slippery surface, which bedbugs struggle to climb. Bathrooms also tend to be cleaned more thoroughly and frequently than other areas of a hotel room.

As a result, they are less likely to harbor pests. Before settling in, travel experts advise inspecting the room, especially the mattress seams, headboard, and surrounding furniture. Look for rust-colored stains, discarded shells, or small insects. For travelers who prefer a more traditional option, a metal luggage rack is the next best place to keep luggage.

Metal is harder for bedbugs to climb than fabric or wood, though it should still be checked before use. Storing clothing in sealed bags can offer additional protection, preventing insects from settling in pockets or folds of fabric. These preventative steps matter because bedbugs are resilient and capable of surviving for long periods without feeding. Taking a few moments to safeguard your belongings can help ensure a more comfortable trip and prevent unwanted surprises once you return home.
