A tragic helicopter crash in New York claimed the lives of six people, including Siemens executive Agustín Escobar, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three young children. What was meant to be a joyful sightseeing tour turned into a heartbreaking disaster within minutes of takeoff.
The helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, departed from Lower Manhattan at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Just fifteen minutes later, the aircraft spiraled out of control and plunged into the Hudson River near Pier 40, in full view of stunned witnesses along the Manhattan waterfront.
Onlookers described a terrifying sequence. Some heard what sounded like a “sonic boom,” followed by the tail and rotors detaching mid-air. The helicopter reportedly nosed downward before crashing into the water. Videos posted to social media showed the aircraft spiraling without its rotors before flipping upside down upon impact.
