Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate Speaks Out After Family Tragedy
Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey has broken his silence following a devastating personal loss. His emotional message comes just days after a fatal helicopter crash claimed the lives of several close family members.
A Family Lost in Montana
Bailey revealed that his son, Zachary Adam Bailey, his daughter-in-law, Kelsey Danielle, and their two children, Vada Rose, 12, and Samuel Isaac, 7, died in a helicopter crash in remote Montana on October 22, 2025. The crash occurred near Ekalaka, leaving a mark of heartbreak on the Bailey family.
Sole Survivor: Finnley, 10
Darren and his wife, Cindy, learned the tragic news from authorities. Their only surviving grandchild, Finnley “Finn” Tate, 10, was not on the helicopter. He is now safely in the care of family.
On October 29, Darren shared an update on X, writing:
“Their firstborn son, Finnley Tate, age 10, survives, surrounded by loving family.”
He also confirmed the ages of his late son and daughter-in-law—37 and 35, respectively—and thanked supporters for their prayers and compassion during this trying time.

Celebration of Life and Memorial
A celebration of life is planned for Monday, November 3, 2025, at 9 a.m. at the Oil Belt Christian Service Camp in Illinois. The Baileys, originally from Xenia, will be buried privately at Oskaloosa Cemetery following public visitation hours on Sunday, November 2, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The family requested that donations be made to a GoFundMe for Finnley’s future. For those wishing to send flowers or gifts, The Mustard Seed in Louisville, Illinois, is the designated provider.
Investigation Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that the victims were flying in a Robinson Helicopter R66 when the crash occurred. The cause remains under investigation.
The Carter County Department of Emergency Services reported first responders arrived at the scene around 7:22 p.m. They were met with the grim aftermath of the accident.
Heartbroken but Finding Strength
In a joint statement with fellow candidate Aaron Del Mar’s campaign, Darren and Cindy shared:
“We are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. We find comfort in our faith, our family, and the prayers of those who love and care for us.”
Communities locally and beyond have been deeply moved by the tragedy. As the Baileys prepare to lay their loved ones to rest, they continue to draw strength from faith and public support, holding on to the light of Finnley, the lone survivor.
