A Gentle Giant at Home

At the Orphaned Wildlife Center (OWC) in Otisville, New York, the founders dedicate their lives to caring for injured and orphaned wildlife. They rescue animals, rehabilitate them—and when release isn’t possible—they provide lifelong sanctuary. Among all the residents, one bear stood out: a male Kodiak bear named Jimbo (sometimes called “Jimmy”).

Early Life & Why He Stayed

Jimbo arrived as a young bear under circumstances that made wild release impossible. According to OWC, he weighed around 1,400 lbs and was approximately 23 years old when the listing was made. He lived in the sanctuary because he could not adapt to life in the wild.

Size, Personality & Daily Life

Jimbo grew to a massive size—but inside he remained calm and affectionate. He reportedly stood about nine and a half feet tall on his hind legs and weighed nearly 1,500 lbs. The caretakers describe him as trusting and social with them, though his life was not about performing tricks. The sanctuary states the bears are not trained for shows.

Sanctuary Principles & Enclosures

The OWC does not operate as a traditional zoo. The founders emphasize that animals are not forced into entertainment. The bears live in large, natural‑style enclosures with woods, ponds, and inside dens. This setup supports comfort and natural behaviours.

Legacy & Final Note

Jimbo passed away in April 2018 from liver cancer. Though his time is over, his story remains a powerful example of compassionate wildlife care. The sanctuary continues to serve as refuge for bears and other animals whose only home can be one of love and protection.
