Minnesota Mourns Melissa Hortman After Fatal Shooting

Minnesota is mourning the loss of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, who were found deceased in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday morning. Authorities have confirmed that the couple’s deaths are connected to a series of targeted attacks that also left State Senator John Hoffman and his wife injured.

Law enforcement officials responded to reports of suspicious activity near the Hortman residence shortly before dawn. When officers arrived, they encountered a man posing as a law enforcement officer, who fled the scene after an exchange of gunfire. Inside the home, police discovered Melissa and Mark Hortman.

Investigators believe the incident may have been politically motivated and are pursuing multiple leads. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, FBI, and local police departments have launched a joint investigation and a statewide search for the suspect. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and to report any suspicious behavior. Melissa Hortman served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for more than 20 years and most recently held the position of Speaker

She was widely recognized for her work on education, renewable energy, and community development. Her husband, Mark, was a respected professional in the technology field and a devoted family man. Governor Tim Walz expressed deep condolences, calling the tragedy a heartbreaking loss for Minnesota and honoring the couple’s lifelong commitment to public service and community values.
