When the parents of Charlie Kirk, the deceased MAGA firebrand, saw their son’s mahogany coffin in person on Thursday, they clutched to one another in agony.
The poignant moment came after a somber ceremony in Salt Lake City, where Vice President JD Vance assisted in the removal of Kirk’s casket from a hearse.
At Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base, Vance then led National Guard soldiers in carrying the casket up the stairs of Air Force Two.
Along with Kirk’s grieving wife, their two small children, and his parents, who were clearly devastated as they witnessed the ceremonies, the jet will return Kirk’s remains to his native Arizona.
Only a day after the conservative activist was killed during a demonstration at Utah Valley University, the stirring remembrance was given.
President Donald Trump has stated that he will attend the burial, which is now scheduled for next week. Speaking with Kirk’s wife, Erika, he added, he heard that she is “devastated, absolutely devastated.”
Kirk was well-known for engaging in student debates at gatherings like the one he was hosting at UVU, where he engaged in heated arguments with young liberals over topics like gun control and abortion.
Kirk and his mentor Bill Montgomery co-founded Turning Point USA, the nonprofit he uses to host the events.
Eight years after founding the conservative action group with Kirk, Montgomery passed away in July 2020 at the age of 80 from COVID-19-related complications.
He has frequently been referred to as Kirk’s mentor, helping to introduce the young debater into the political realm after he heard him talk at a college function when he was just eighteen.
Montgomery reportedly encouraged Kirk to forgo college and focus on building Turning Point USA into one of the most powerful organizations in the country, and he supplied funds to help the organization get off the ground.
Prior to becoming one of America’s most well-known conservatives and his notoriety as a crucial Trump ally, Kirk’s family also had an unexpected relationship with the future president.
According to PrimeTimer, Kirk’s father, Robert Kirk, was a construction worker who also ran his own architectural practice. Kirk’s portfolio included employment as a project architect manager on the Trump Tower in Manhattan.
Kirk’s father gained notoriety in the construction industry through a number of high-profile building projects, although he was not as vocal in public as his son would become.
His other properties included the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, in addition to Trump Tower.
Although it would have been decades before Charlie became one of Trump’s closest pals, it is unknown if the elder Kirk ever had a face-to-face meeting with the president during his real estate days.
According to public documents, Charlie Kirk, his wife Erika, and their two kids resided in a $5.2 million estate in Arizona.
Much of Kirk’s family, including his mother Kimberly Ann, who was allegedly a mental health counselor, is unknown and maintains a low public profile.
Kirk has never posted pictures of his parents, but in 2015, he did post pictures of his grandma enjoying Cubs games.
Before his sister Mary became an art curator in Illinois, the influencer also posted a photo in 2014 commemorating her high school graduation.
According to a 2018 Chicago Tribune profile, Kirk had previously called his parents Republicans, “but not particularly ardent ones.”
Kirk claimed that a disagreement with a teacher over George W. Bush in high school was what ultimately led to his political awakening rather than his parents.
“I remember a class … and (the teacher) was such a militant leftist and socialist, he would put me so on the spot for being a conservative, for being a Republican,” Kirk recalled.
He would say, “Socialism is great. We need free health care, free housing.” “He was so aggressive about it.”
Montgomery, his mentor, claimed to have met Kirk shortly after the adolescent started getting involved in politics in April 2012, when he created an organization called SOS Liberty and produced conservative YouTube videos.
Trump broke the news that Kirk, a 31-year-old activist, was dead after he was shot on Wednesday.
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” Trump posted at 4:40 p.m, around three hours after the shooting.
“No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.”
“Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!” the president said.
The three American flags at the White House were then lowered to half-staff after Trump gave the command.
Shortly after Kirk was wounded in the neck by an unidentified shooter as he was answering questions from students at the Turning Point USA event, the president asked the nation to pray for him.
“We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!” Trump said on Truth Social.
