On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 5th, a tragic accident shook the city of Ipameri, Goiás. A rollover involving a school van resulted in the death of a 9-year-old girl, identified as Celina Victoria Frões Muniz Goes. The incident occurred on a country road, approximately 35 km from the paved road, in a region known as Mata do Calixto.
Police Chief Diogo Ferreira told the g1 portal that the vehicle involved in the accident belonged to an independent rural school transportation provider. The Ipameri City Hall, in an official statement, expressed its condolences for the loss of the young student, declaring three days of mourning in Celina’s memory. The school where the girl studied, Nossa Senhora de Fátima Municipal School, suspended classes out of respect for the student’s memory, and teachers, including the education secretary, attended the wake and burial, which took place in Caldas Novas.
Accident Details
According to Fire Department Major Rodrigo André, there were five children and the driver in the van at the time of the accident. Celina’s brother was also present and suffered an injury, a bruise on his foot. The driver, meanwhile, suffered only a graze on his back but decided not to seek medical attention and remained at the scene.
After the rollover, the driver managed to pull Celina out from under the vehicle. Chief Ferreira stated that the driver was properly registered to operate school transportation on the route he was traveling. The investigation has begun, and an inquiry will be opened to interview witnesses and the driver himself, who, according to the chief, was not yet in a suitable condition to testify.
