The two communicate via \u201cour seventh sense, if you would,\u201d Mary, 60, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week\u2019s issue. \u201cOur communication is between hearts now, and not lips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary and Randy Travis.Fredrik Broden<br \/>\nWhile the prognosis is different for every stroke survivor, Randy is continually making progress \u2014 and just celebrated his 60th birthday at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. \u201cThe whole third midsection of Randy\u2019s left brain was affected, which is speaking, writing and reading,\u201d Mary explains. \u201cBut each day there\u2019s something new that he says or does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Randy Travis with Mary\u2019s son Raleigh.Mary Davis Travis<br \/>\nNow the singer is telling his own story with his new book, Forever and Ever, Amen: A Memoir of Music, Faith and Braving the Storms of Life, out May 14. From his music career, which has earned him seven Grammy Awards, to his 19-year marriage to his former manager and their divorce as well as his struggles with alcohol abuse and anger, the book details all the highs and lows of Randy\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Working with writer Ken Abraham, the singer \u201cwanted people to understand that he\u2019s human,\u201d says Mary. \u201cAnd that they can overcome too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Randy Travis relearning to play the guitar.Mary Davis Travis<br \/>\nFor Randy, getting to go home shortly before Thanksgiving in 2013 after spending four months in hospitals recovering, \u201cwas like somebody left the gate open and boy, we were going to go live life,\u201d Mary says. Back at their ranch, the singer had to relearn the most basic of skills. \u201cHe didn\u2019t know what the TV remote was or what the telephone was,\u201d adds Mary. \u201cIt takes you back to raising a child, and you start all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fredrik Broden<br \/>\nDespite the singer\u2019s limitations, \u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s ever seen himself as a victim,\u201d Mary says. The couple spend their days going for walks around the property for therapy and attend a weekly Bible study class in a nearby town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell him all the time, \u2018You speak volumes in your silence,\u2019\u201d Mary adds. \u201cIn his silence, he can make me feel like a princess.
