I never planned to stop at that roadside auction.
\nI was just driving home from Mom\u2019s old place\u2014clearing out the last box of her sweaters, trying not to cry into the steering wheel\u2014when I saw the sign: \u201cFARM SALE \u2013 TODAY ONLY.\u201d Something in me hit the brakes.<\/p>\n
The place smelled like dust and diesel and old hay. I wasn\u2019t looking to buy anything. But then I saw them\u2014three tiny goats, huddled in a corner pen. One brown, one white, and one mottled like some half-drawn sketch. Shivering. Way too young to be separated from their mother.<\/p>\n
The guy running the pen told me they were \u201cunsold leftovers.\u201d Meant for feed.<\/p>\n
That word\u2014leftovers\u2014hit like a slap.<\/p>\n
You see, the night before my mother passed, she\u2019d looked at me through her oxygen mask and whispered something I couldn\u2019t make sense of at the time:
\n\u201cDon\u2019t leave the soft things behind.\u201d<\/p>\n
I thought she meant memories. Or maybe her dog.
\nBut standing in front of those three baby goats, barely more than a bundle of bones and trembling fur, I heard her voice like thunder in my head.<\/p>\n
So I did something wild.
\nI scooped them up\u2014literally, all three\u2014and said, \u201cI\u2019ll take them.\u201d I had no plan. No farm. No idea how to raise goats. Just a backseat full of blankets and a trunk full of grief.<\/p>\n
And as they nuzzled into my arms, bleating like they already knew me, I realized what she meant.<\/p>\n
