I was behind the counter at the coffee shop. It was the morning rush. An old man, maybe eighty, was trying to pay. His hands shook bad. He dropped a handful of coins on the floor.<\/p>\n
Behind him, this kid in a slick suit, couldn\u2019t have been older than twenty-five, let out a loud groan. \u201cAre you serious, grandpa? Some of us have meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n
The old man didn\u2019t say anything. He just knelt down slow, his bones creaking, trying to pick up the dimes.<\/p>\n

\nThe kid stepped right over him, slapped his credit card on the counter, and said, \u201cI\u2019ll pay for his. Just get him out of my way.\u201d Then he looked down at the old man and kicked his metal walker. It clattered across the floor. \u201cTime to go,\u201d the kid sneered, grabbing his latte.<\/p>\n
The old man just looked at him. There was no fear in his eyes. It was a look I\u2019d never seen before. Quiet. Hard. Like a stone at the bottom of a river.<\/p>\n
An hour went by.<\/p>\n
Two black cars pulled up and blocked the street. Four men in dark suits and earpieces walked in. They weren\u2019t police. They scanned the room. One of them walked up to me, showed me a photo of the kid from our security camera.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid you see this man interact with an elderly gentleman about an hour ago?\u201d he asked. His voice was flat.<\/p>\n
I told him everything. I told him about the coins, the walker, all of it.<\/p>\n
He nodded, listening. He pulled out his phone, made a call. \u201cWe have confirmation,\u201d he said into the phone. \u201cAsset was engaged. Hostile. Physical contact.\u201d He paused. \u201cYes, sir. We have his plate number. We know who his father is.\u201d<\/p>\n
He hung up. He looked at me. \u201cThank you for your help.\u201d<\/p>\n
I had to ask. \u201cWho was that old man?\u201d<\/p>\n
The agent\u2019s eyes went cold. \u201cThat \u2018old man\u2019 spent forty years in the field. He was the personal bodyguard for three different presidents. He\u2019s retired, but we don\u2019t take it lightly when someone puts their hands on him.\u201d He started to walk away, then stopped at the door. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to arrest the kid,\u201d he said, looking back at me. \u201cWe\u2019re just going to pay his father a visit. It turns out, his dad is the United States Senator for this state.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then he was gone.<\/p>\n
The coffee shop felt silent after that, even with the hiss of the espresso machine. The United States Senator. Of course. It explained the suit, the entitlement, the sheer lack of awareness that other people existed in the world.<\/p>\n
