\nJames \u201cBo\u201d Gritz, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces officer who said he inspired the character John Rambo portrayed by Sylvester Stallone, has died at the age of 87.<\/p>\n

His passing was confirmed in a statement from his wife, who shared that he died peacefully. No official cause of death was disclosed.<\/p>\n

Gritz spent decades in public life, first as a decorated military officer and later as a political activist and mediator during high-profile standoffs in the United States.<\/p>\n

His career reflected a combination of battlefield service, political involvement, and controversial affiliations that drew both admiration and criticism.<\/p>\n

Distinguished Service in Vietnam
\nGritz served in the Vietnam War as a member of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). During his military career, he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring from the Army.<\/p>\n

He received multiple commendations for his service, including three Silver Stars, reflecting his participation in combat operations and acts of bravery.<\/p>\n

While deployed, he led Detachment B-36 of the 5th Special Forces Group. The unit operated as part of the MIKE Force, a combined team of American personnel and Cambodian-Vietnamese fighters.<\/p>\n

This specialized group carried out missions in the III Corps area of southern South Vietnam, close to the Cambodian border, an area known for intense military activity.<\/p>\n

One of the missions frequently associated with Gritz involved retrieving the black box from a downed Lockheed U-2 spy plane in Cambodia in December 1966.<\/p>\n

The operation required entering enemy territory and was described as a significant undertaking during the war.<\/p>\n

In addition to battlefield operations, Gritz later claimed involvement in covert missions intended to locate and rescue American prisoners of war in Laos.<\/p>\n
