PART 1 \u2014 The Tuesday He Finally Left Early
\nTuesday mornings were a routine Michael Harrison could run in his sleep.<\/p>\n
Up at 5:30 a.m.
\nBreakfast for Lily, his 9-year-old.
\nBackpack. Hair. Shoes.
\nBus stop by 7:15.<\/p>\n
Then the sprint across town to clock in at 8:00 a.m. at Morrison Supply Chain Management.<\/p>\n
At 34, Michael had mastered the single-dad race\u2014though \u201cmastered\u201d might be generous, considering how often he showed up breathless and apologizing.<\/p>\n
But today was supposed to be different.<\/p>\n
Today he\u2019d left early.
\nA real buffer.
\nA rare chance to arrive on time for once\u2014maybe even quiet the constant warnings about punctuality.<\/p>\n
Then he saw the car on the shoulder of Route 9.<\/p>\n
A sleek black sedan with its hazards blinking, angled awkwardly near the edge of the road. Michael nearly drove past. Being on time was finally within reach, and stopping would wreck it.<\/p>\n
But then he saw her.<\/p>\n
A woman in an elegant brown dress, clearly pregnant, standing beside the sedan with panic written all over her face.<\/p>\n
Michael\u2019s conscience beat his self-preservation.<\/p>\n
He pulled over.<\/p>\n
\u201cMa\u2019am\u2014are you okay?\u201d he called as he approached.<\/p>\n
She turned, and Michael realized she was further along than he\u2019d assumed\u2014around eight months. Blonde hair styled like she\u2019d stepped out of a boardroom. Jewelry that didn\u2019t belong on the side of a highway.<\/p>\n
Yet her expression was pure fear.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy tire,\u201d she said, gesturing helplessly. \u201cIt blew out. And I have a meeting in Portland in 90 minutes\u2014a critical one. I can\u2019t miss it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Michael checked his watch.<\/p>\n
7:42 a.m.<\/p>\n
If he moved fast, maybe he\u2019d still make work by 8:15. Maybe.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have a spare?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
Relief washed over her.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the trunk. But I\u2019ve never\u2026 I don\u2019t know how to do any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n
