The wheelchair changed more than her legs. It changed the way she sees herself in rooms. In aisles. In lines.<\/p>\n
She hates feeling like she takes up space.<\/p>\n
Last week, she said, \u201cI want to go to the store with you.\u201d<\/p>\n
I froze with my keys in my hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo Lark?\u201d<\/p>\n
She nodded. \u201cI miss picking my own apples, Eli. I miss being normal.\u201d<\/p>\n
We chose a weekday morning. Lark Market is our family\u2019s store, but Mom never liked attention. We keep that quiet.<\/p>\n
She wore her gray sweater and the scarf she calls her \u201cpublic armor.\u201d I pushed her slowly, like the tile might shift under us.<\/p>\n
We got flour, apples, pecans, butter. For a few minutes, she was herself again.<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n
Then we reached checkout.<\/p>\n
Her hands tightened on the armrests. Her jaw locked. The line was short, but being visible drains her in ways I can\u2019t fix.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m staying.\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when the woman appeared.<\/p>\n
Forties. Polished. Heels sharp enough to cut through tile. Her cart was overflowing with champagne, wagyu, caviar\u2014food wrapped like jewelry.<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t look at the line.<\/p>\n
She shoved her cart directly into Mom\u2019s wheelchair.<\/p>\n
Hard enough to jerk the front wheel sideways.<\/p>\n
Mom sucked in a breath.<\/p>\n
