Lauren Turner, a 19-year-old sophomore and standout defensive midfielder for the Titans women\u2019s soccer team, died on November 7, nearly six weeks after she and teammate Ashlyn Gwynn were struck by a box truck while riding electric scooters near campus, according to the Fullerton Police Department.<\/p>\n
The collision left both athletes with life-threatening injuries and sent waves of shock through the CSUF community.<\/p>\n

The night everything changed<\/p>\n
On September 27, Turner and Gwynn were riding electric scooters around 7 p.m. on Associated Road near campus, heading to a CSUF men\u2019s soccer match when a box truck traveling in the same lane struck them.<\/p>\n
Police said the players were riding without helmets, and early findings indicated that alcohol and drugs were not factors.<\/p>\n
Both scooters were left mangled in the roadway as investigators worked to understand how the tragedy unfolded.<\/p>\n
\u201dWhen we got news of this incident, a part of me died,\u201d leadership coach Ali Malaekeh told CBS.<\/p>\n
Turner suffered catastrophic head trauma and was placed in the ICU, where she remained in a coma until her death. Gwynn, also critically injured, spent a month in the ICU before being moved to a step-down unit.<\/p>\n
A new safety measure<\/p>\n
Her family called her progress nothing short of extraordinary:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are witnessing a miracle in her healing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, they acknowledge she faces a long recovery ahead, including physical, occupational, speech, and swallow therapy. Doctors expect 1\u20132 years of ongoing rehabilitation.<\/p>\n
Following the tragedy, Cal State Fullerton head coach Demian Brown implemented a new safety measure he hopes will protect every athlete moving forward: a mandatory helmet requirement for all players riding electric scooters.<\/p>\n
Brown said the decision reflects a growing shift across college programs nationwide:<\/p>\n
\u201cSo many schools, so many programs have initiated their own helmet rules for their teams,\u201d Brown explained.<\/p>\n
He added that the goal is simple \u2014 to ensure no team ever endures a loss like this again:<\/p>\n
\u201cIf anything can come out of it, if we can do something to prevent something like this happening somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n
A campus in mourning<\/p>\n
The loss of Turner has devastated not only her teammates but the wider Titan community. Throughout the season, players wore custom wristbands embroidered with \u201cLT5 \u2013 AG7\u201d, honoring both injured teammates.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, financial support continues to pour in. Turner\u2019s GoFundMe has surpassed $105,000, while Gwynn\u2019s fundraiser nears $66,000.<\/p>\n
