What the White House promoted as a monthlong federal strike on violent crime in Washington has turned into something much different. According to Associated Press data, more than 40% of the 2,300 arrests made under President Trump\u2019s \u201ccrime emergency\u201d were actually for immigration violations.<\/p>\n
Federal officials highlighted successes: over a dozen homicide suspects captured, 20 alleged gang members arrested, and 220+ illegal firearms seized. Yet buried in the numbers are 940 arrests tied to immigration enforcement\u2014a fact critics say proves the operation was less about crime and more about deportation expansion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe federal takeover has been a cover to do immigration enforcement,\u201d said Austin Rose of the Amica Center for Immigrant Rights. Reports show only about 22% of those picked up on immigration charges even had criminal records.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s move came after invoking Section 740 of the Home Rule Act, declaring a \u201ccrime emergency\u201d that gave his administration authority over D.C.\u2019s police. National Guard troops remain stationed across the city.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Pam Bondi also directed officials to revoke D.C.\u2019s sanctuary policies, forcing local police to cooperate with immigration enforcement. She argued the city\u2019s protections for undocumented immigrants \u201cmultiplied\u201d violent crime.<\/p>\n
For immigrant communities, the fear is real. Many now avoid work, limit travel, and live under the constant threat of detention. \u201cIt\u2019s created unimaginable fear,\u201d Rose added. Meanwhile, DHS praised its role online, boasting about removing \u201cdrug dealers, gang members, and criminal aliens\u201d from D.C. streets.<\/p>\n
