Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s late-night talk show was abruptly pulled off the air indefinitely following a firestorm over remarks he made regarding the shocking and highly publicized death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The suspension, confirmed Sept. 17, by Sinclair Broadcast Group \u2013 the largest ABC affiliate network in the U.S. \u2013 came as mounting pressure from political groups and public backlash grew impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n
Kirk, a high-profile Donald Trump ally and founder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, was tragically shot dead on Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. The event, which drew over 3,000 attendees, turned into a national tragedy when a 22-year-old man, Tyler Robinson, shot a single bullet into his neck. Robinson has since been charged with aggravated murder and several related crimes.<\/p>\n
Fourth stage of grief\u2019<\/p>\n
Days after Kirk\u2019s death, Kimmel addressed the incident on his Sept.15 broadcast. Rather than offering condolences, the comedian took direct aim at Trump\u2019s bizarre public reaction to Kirk\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
During the segment, Kimmel played a clip of Trump being asked how he was \u201cholding up\u201d following the assassination of his friend. Trump responded awkwardly with, \u201cI think very good,\u201d then abruptly shifted focus \u2013 ignoring the gravity of the question \u2013 and began discussing new construction at the White House.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd by the way, right there you see all the trucks. They just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House, which is something they\u2019ve been trying to get for about 150 years. And it\u2019s gonna be a beauty. It\u2019ll be an absolutely magnificent structure,\u201d Trump told the reporter.<\/p>\n
Kimmel\u2019s response was biting: \u201cHe\u2019s at the fourth stage of grief: construction. This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

If that wasn\u2019t enough, Kimmel escalated the takedown, showing another clip of Trump once again focusing on the White House ballroom project, dismissing the assassination when asked.<\/p>\n

By September 17, with the next episode scheduled to tape in Hollywood, ABC \u2013 under pressure from its affiliate network \u2013 pulled the plug without warning.<\/p>\n

Breach of \u2018professionalism and accountability\u2019<\/p>\n
While free speech advocates have condemned the suspension, calling it a dangerous precedent for silencing political commentary, Sinclair made it clear that that the move was based on what it views as a breach of \u201cprofessionalism and accountability\u201d by both Kimmel and the network that hosts him.<\/p>\n
\u201cMr. Kimmel\u2019s remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country,\u201d Sinclair Vice Chairman Jason Smith said in an official statement shared on X.<\/p>\n

Three conditions<\/p>\n
According to Sinclair, \u201csuspension is not enough.\u201d The company outlined three specific conditions that the comedian must meet before Jimmy Kimmel Live! can return to the air.<\/p>\n
First, the media group stated it would not consider reinstating the program until \u201cformal discussions are held with ABC regarding the network\u2019s commitment to professionalism.\u201d In short, not only must Kimmel act \u2013 ABC must also reassure Sinclair that such incidents won\u2019t happen again.<\/p>\n
Next, \u201ca direct apology to the Kirk family\u201d is non-negotiable. Sinclair emphasized the need for a personal and public acknowledgment of the pain caused by Kimmel\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n
Lastly, Kimmel \u201cmust make a meaningful personal donation\u201d to both the Kirk family and Turning Point USA. This stipulation appears to signal Sinclair\u2019s desire to both recognize the humanitarian fallout and restore goodwill with the organization whose founder was targeted.<\/p>\n
\u201cRegardless of ABC\u2019s plans for the future of the program, Sinclair intends not to return Jimmy Kimmel Live! to our air until we are confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform,\u201d the post concludes.<\/p>\n
Kimmel \u2018pissed\u2019<\/p>\n
As of Sept. 18, Kimmel has not made any public statements regarding the suspension or Sinclair\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n
However, according to a producer, the late-night talk host is \u201cpissed\u201d and \u201cabsolutely f\u2013king livid,\u201d according to the Daily Mail, per the New York Post.<\/p>\n
