The update comes just days after Roberts posted from his hospital bed, revealing that he had been battling malaria, a tropical disease rarely seen in the U.S. and potentially fatal if left untreated. The longtime anchor said he had spent \u201cfive days and six nights\u201d at Virginia\u2019s Inova Fairfax hospital, describing malaria as \u201can awful disease that needs to be attacked full-force when a diagnosis is made.\u201d<\/p>\n
From studio lights to a sudden health crisis<\/p>\n
Roberts initially began feeling ill days after returning from a family trip to Indonesia in July. In an interview with People, he shared that his symptoms began with full-body aches and intense chills, at one point shivering uncontrollably on live TV.<\/p>\n
After a personal medical advisor urged him to visit the ER, doctors found dangerously low platelet and white blood cell counts. The diagnosis: malaria.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was a little scared,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI\u2019ve never felt that sick in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite ongoing symptoms like temperature swings and fatigue, Roberts has credited his medical team, and his wife, ABC News correspondent Kyra Phillips, for getting him through it.
