The CEO of a Polish paving company, could be seen \u2018snatching\u2019 the hat
\nAn apology issued by Piotr Szczerek \u2013 who was tracked down by a pack of angry internet sleuths \u2013 hasn\u2019t gone down too well.<\/p>\n
The millionaire CEO sparked mass controversy following his attendance at the US Open on 28 August, where he witnessed Kamil Majchrzak defeat Karen Khachanov in the second round.<\/p>\n
Following the win, the Polish tennis star did a victory lap of the court, and was seen on the big screen signing balls for members of the audience \u2013 among them was a young boy named Brock.<\/p>\n
At one point, Majchrzak took off his cap and appeared to hand it to Brock.<\/p>\n
However, in gut-wrenching footage, an adult man standing beside the boy \u2013 later identified as Szczerek, the CEO of a Polish paving company \u2013 seemingly \u2018snatched\u2019 the cap away before placing it into a bag, leaving the youngster stunned.<\/p>\n
Piotr Szczerek\u2019s response
\nUnsurprisingly, the clip quickly went viral on the internet, forcing the CEO to apologise for his \u2018huge mistake\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cDue to the situation that happened during Kamil Majchrzak\u2019s match at the US Open, I would like to clearly apologise to the injured boy, his family, as well as all the fans and the player himself,\u201d a statement Szczerek shared on social media read.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have made a huge mistake. In emotions, in the crowd rejoicing after the victory, I was convinced the tennis player tips his hat in my direction \u2013 to my sons who have asked for autographs earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cFor years, my wife and I have been engaged in helping children and young athletes, but this situation has shown I think that one moment of disregard can ruin years of work and support.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt hurts for me, but a needed lesson in humility. I believe that only through actions can rebuild what has been lost trust.<\/p>\n
\u201cAgain, I\u2019m sorry to anyone I disappointed. Please understand \u2013 for my family\u2019s sake \u2013 I decided to turn off the option comments on this post.\u201d<\/p>\n
Szczerek continued: \u201cThe misconception caused me to pull out my hand. Today I know I did something that looked like a deliberate collection of the child\u2019s souvenir. This was not my intention, but it doesn\u2019t change the fact I hurt the boy and disappointed the fans.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, in spite of the CEO\u2019s claims, his \u2018sorry\u2019 has seemingly rubbed some internet users up the wrong way, a number of whom apparently fail to believe in the sincerity of Szczerek\u2019s words.<\/p>\n
\u201cA forced apology is not an apology,\u201d one hit out on Facebook.<\/p>\n
Another added: \u201cFORCED! He should have immediately handed it to the child.\u201d<\/p>\n
A third wrote: \u201cThat was the most unapologetic apology I\u2019ve seen in a long while. He\u2019s trying to make it sound like like HE is a victim.\u201d<\/p>\n
Someone else claimed: \u201cOnly apologize because he was caught on video.\u201d<\/p>\n
What has Kamil Majchrzak said?
\nAfter footage of the incident spread, the athlete released a statement online, claiming he was aware of the controversy.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the match I didn\u2019t record that my cap didn\u2019t get to the boy,\u201d the 29-year-old player wrote on social media.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks to Asics Tennis I\u2019ve got enough caps, so I\u2019m prepared for that. Hey guys, could you help me find the kid from my match? If it\u2019s you (or your parents see this), please send me a DM.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hours later, he shared another post, revealing he\u2019d since made contact with Brock\u2019s family.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am impressed by the power of the Internet,\u201d Majchrzak gushed. \u201cWe got it! All good now.\u201d<\/p>\n
The sportsman later met with Brock, posing for photos beside the youngster.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday after warm up, I had a nice meeting,\u201d Majchrzak wrote on Instagram, quipping: \u201cDo you recognise [the cap]?\u201d<\/p>\n
