Some were faded, others crisp, like they\u2019d been hoarded for years.<\/p>\n<p>I barely had time to process what I was looking at before my neighbor, Margaret, yanked the bag out of my hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the hell do you think you\u2019re doing?!\u201d she hissed, her eyes wild with desperation.<\/p>\n<p>My heart pounded. \u201cWhat is all this? Why was this in your trash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She clutched the bag to her chest, her breath ragged. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have seen that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took a step back, suddenly aware of how dangerously close we were to something far bigger than a simple misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret\u2026\u201d I said cautiously. \u201cIs this stolen money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She let out a bitter laugh, one that was half a sob. \u201cNo. It\u2019s mine. Every penny of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned. \u201cThen why throw it away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face with the back of her hand, her shoulders sagging in defeat. \u201cBecause it\u2019s cursed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her. \u201cCursed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked around, as if making sure no one else could hear. Then, in a hushed whisper, she said, \u201cThirty years ago, my husband robbed a bank. He swore he\u2019d turn himself in, but\u2026 he never got the chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill crawl up my spine. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died. A car accident. Right before he could confess. And ever since then, I\u2019ve been living with this money, this\u2026 tainted thing. Every time I tried to use it, something terrible happened. I lost my sister. My son. My house burned down. It\u2019s a curse, I tell you. And I finally decided\u2014this money needs to be gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed hard, glancing back at the bags. The weight of her words pressed on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when I threw it away,\u201d she continued, voice trembling, \u201cI was finally ready to let go. But you\u2026 you took that from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my stomach twist. What had I done?<\/p>\n<p>Margaret turned to the dump worker nearby. \u201cBurn it. All of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated. \u201cMa\u2019am, I\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNOW!\u201d she screamed.<\/p>\n<p>I stood frozen as the worker grabbed the bags and tossed them into the incinerator. Flames roared to life, devouring the money in seconds. Margaret let out a long, shaky breath.<\/p>\n<p>And then, as if a weight had lifted off her, she smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t know if I believed in curses.
