Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, aged 69, was elected as Pope on Thursday, becoming the first American cardinal to have been selected as pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.<\/p>\n
The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, describes Pope Leo XIV\u2019s first message to the world as a call to peace and dialogue. He also highlights the significance of his name as a clear reference to the Church\u2019s social teaching in the modern age.<\/p>\n
Pope Leo XIV\u2019s inaugural Mass will be held in St. Peter\u2019s Square on Sunday, May 18 at 10am Rome time, according to the Holy See Press Office.<\/p>\n

The first-ever American pope was elected to lead the Catholic church on May 8. On Monday, May 12, the Chicago-born pontiff \u2014 previously known as Cardinal Robert Prevost \u2014 made an appearance at the Vatican where he offered a cryptic answer to one reporter\u2019s question.<\/p>\n
NewsNation\u2019s Robert Sherman was one of many reporters voicing questions for the new pope, and in a now-viral exchange, asked if Leo had \u201cany message for the United States?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMany,\u201d the pope replied, before simply adding, \u201cGod Bless you all.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some online wondered if, perhaps, the pope had misheard Sherman as asking for \u201cblessings\u201d rather than \u201cmessages,\u201d however, others interpreted the answer as more pointed.<\/p>\n

\nRegardless of his intent, the pope\u2019s previous social media activity has indicated some discrepancies between his beliefs and the actions of the U.S. government.<\/p>\n
In February, Prevost shared two news articles to his X profile. One, titled, \u201cJD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn\u2019t ask us to rank our love for others,\u201d refuted Vance\u2019s proclamation about Christian priorities in a Fox News interview. The other delved deeper into the late Pope Francis\u2019 criticism of Vance using the Catholic concept of \u201cordo amoris\u201d to justify the Trump administration\u2019s immigration policies.<\/p>\n
Despite past critical posts about the Trump administration, however, both the president and vice president were quick to offer their congratulations to the religious leader upon his election as Pope Francis\u2019 successor.<\/p>\n
